Merz threatens that Germany will not participate in Eurovision if Israel is expelled

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that it would be a scandal to exclude Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest.

“In that case, Germany should withdraw. I would support that. I find it a scandal that something like this is even being discussed. Israel is part of this community,” the German Chancellor said.

A heated debate has erupted between participating countries and broadcasters broadcasting the contest. Broadcasters from Switzerland and the host country, Austria, have supported Israel’s participation. In contrast, broadcasters from Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia, and the Netherlands have threatened to boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna over Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip.
