Israel and Hamas prepare for talks

Israel and Hamas are set to begin Egyptian-brokered talks aimed at ending the fighting in Gaza today.

An Israeli delegation led by Ron Dermer is heading to Egypt for talks in Sharm el-Sheikh. The meetings are being held in the Red Sea resort and will focus on the release of hostages, a key component of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the nearly two-year-old war.

The US Secretary of State said the “coming days are critical” to the success of the talks. President Trump called for the process to move forward quickly on Sunday night. “We have had very positive talks with Hamas and various countries over the past week. They are going well and at a rapid pace. Technical teams will meet again in Egypt on Monday to finalize the details. I have been informed that the first phase is expected to be completed this week. I ask everyone to act quickly,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Arab countries, particularly Egypt and Qatar, have been pressuring Hamas to agree to Trump’s proposal. Qatar, which has previously acted as a mediator, stressed in a statement that the US president’s efforts could “provide quick results and stop the bloodshed of the Palestinians.”
