Trump spokesman hits back at Pope's criticism

Pope Leo XIV, who initially won the support of conservative Catholics after his election by restoring traditions that his predecessor, Pope Francis, had shunned, now appears to have lost their support.

The reason was his unexpected criticism of US President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policy. Levon questioned whether it was consistent with the Church’s pro-life teaching.

“If someone says they are against abortion but support the inhumane treatment of migrants in the United States, I don’t understand if that is pro-life,” Pope Leo XIV told reporters.

The pope’s statement surprised those who had previously praised him for his restraint and consistent stance. They are confused that Pope Leo XIV criticized the current leader of global conservatives.

The Trump administration, which has been a fierce critic of Francis but has rarely responded to Levon 14, has hit back this time. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she rejects the characterization of the migrants as “inhumane.”
