Hong Kong lawmakers have passed a law that requires a minimum floor area, a separate bathroom, and other requirements for small apartments. Approximately 220,000 people, mostly migrants, students, and young workers, reside in these types of housing.
Under the new law, each apartment must be at least 8 square meters in size, have an opening window, a separate bathroom with a door, and a smoke detector. Currently, approximately a quarter of Hong Kong’s small apartments do not meet this minimum size requirement.
