A Paris court has sentenced former President Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison for illegally receiving campaign funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The verdict means he will remain in prison regardless of whether he appeals. He will also be required to pay a fine of 100,000 euros.
The court found Sarkozy guilty of financing his campaign with funds received from Libya between 2005 and 2007 in exchange for diplomatic favors.
