The United States has imposed severe restrictions on the Iranian delegation attending the UN General Assembly in New York, restricting their movement and barring them from entering large shopping malls and purchasing luxury goods.
Deputy State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement that the move was aimed at putting maximum pressure on Iran’s clerical establishment, accusing it of allowing the government to indulge in luxury shopping abroad. At the same time, ordinary Iranians face poverty, infrastructure destruction, and shortages of water and electricity.
Pigott said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had ordered the Iranian delegation to travel between their hotel and UN headquarters only for official business.
