Syria to hold first elections since Assad's fall

Syria will hold its first elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. President Ahmed al-Sharaa has set October 5 as the date for parliamentary elections, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported on September 21.

It is noted that the election of 140 out of 210 members of parliament will be held in all constituencies of the country. Earlier, the Syrian electoral commission announced its intention to postpone the vote in the province of Suwayda, where clashes between Druze and Bedouin took place in July, as well as in the provinces of al-Hasakah and al-Raqqa, which are partially controlled by the Kurdish "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF). President al-Sharaa will appoint another 70 parliamentarians.
