Elderly British couple released from Afghanistan

An elderly British couple, Barbie Reynolds and Peter Reynolds, who the Taliban captured in Afghanistan in February, have been released. They were flown to Doha on Friday at the behest of Qatar, Reuters reported, citing sources.

At the time, Afghan authorities had detained four people - two Britons, a Chinese-American, and their translator.

Reuters reported that Qatar had been negotiating with the Taliban for months, working with the British government and the couple's family, to secure their release.

"During their eight months of detention, most of which they spent in isolation, the Qatari embassy in Kabul provided them with vital support, arranging medical consultations, medication deliveries, and regular contact with their families," the official said.
