Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani, who visited the United States for the first time in 25 years, met with US Treasury Department officials and members of Congress in Washington.
The Treasury Department discussed ways to return the Syrian economy to the international financial system. The US ambassador to Ankara and high-ranking officials from the Syrian Foreign Ministry also attended the meetings.
In Congress, al-Shaibani met with several senators and members of Congress. Senator Jeanne Shaheen stressed that sanctions against Syria could threaten stability and called for the abolition of the "Caesar Act." Republican Congressman Joe Wilson also made the same proposal.
