Syrian Foreign Minister's historic visit to the US

Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani will visit Washington for the first time in more than 25 years. According to Axios, he will meet with several lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham, to discuss the lifting of US sanctions on Syria, particularly the Caesar Act.

Shaibani is also scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Graham said he would support the lifting of sanctions if Syria makes progress on a new security agreement with Israel and joins the coalition against the Islamic State.

In recent days, Syrian President Ahmed al-Shaaraa said that talks with Israel could yield results in the coming days. Syria expects this process to result in an end to Israeli strikes and a withdrawal of troops from the south.
