Important meeting between Syria and Israel to be held in Baku

Next week, a meeting on security issues between Syria and Israel will be held in Baku. Sky News Arabia reports this, and Azerbaijani media are also disseminating the information.

The American newspaper Axios reported that Israel has submitted a proposal to Syria for a new security agreement, which will be based on the 1979 Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.

According to the proposal, the area southwest of Damascus will be divided into three zones, with the Syrian side being able to maintain different levels of forces and weapons there, depending on the region.

There are also the following conditions: a 2-kilometer expansion of the buffer zone on the Syrian side, the absence of troops and heavy weapons in the zone adjacent to the buffer zone and closest to the Israeli border from the Syrian side. Only Syrian police and internal security forces will be deployed there. The entire area southwest of Damascus to the border with Israel will be declared a no-fly zone for Syrian aircraft.

In return, the Israeli side has proposed a gradual withdrawal of its troops from Syrian territory, except the strategically important peak of Mount Hermon. In addition, one of the critical points of the proposal is the preservation of an air corridor through Syrian territory to Iran, which would allow Israel to strike the Islamic Republic in the future.
