Foreign media outlets reported that after weeks of bombing and airstrikes, the Israeli army launched an offensive on Gaza City tonight.

Al Jazeera and The Times of Israel report that in recent hours, the Israeli army has intensified its strikes on Gaza. Agence France-Presse (AFP), citing residents, reports continuous and powerful shelling of the city.

According to reports, the Israeli government decided to capture Gaza City in early August. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of his government have stated that the main strongholds of the Hamas group are located in Gaza, and they intend to destroy this group entirely.

Announcing its intention to capture the city of the same name in northern Gaza, Israel called on residents to evacuate. However, as many media outlets note, about 300,000 Palestinians have so far been evacuated from Gaza City, which has a population of about one million.
