Merz calls for choosing technical professions instead of going to university

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that too many graduates are going to university in the country, while vocational education remains undervalued.

According to him, this is leading to a shortage of specialists, especially in the energy, construction, and electrical engineering sectors, where about 129,000 positions remain vacant this year. Merz called for the promotion of the development of crafts and technical professions, which are essential for the energy reform and the transition to "green" hydrogen.

"Up to 90 percent of all school graduates go to university. A person does not start with a secondary school certificate and does not end with an academician's diploma," he emphasized.
