UN Security Council to convene session at Poland's request

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today at Poland’s request. Warsaw is seeking international support for Wednesday’s incursion into its airspace by Russian drones.

Many European allies have pledged support for Poland, including Germany’s pledge to boost its military presence on NATO’s eastern flank. Still, some countries have disputed whether the incursion was a deliberate attack by Russia against Poland. US President Donald Trump has shown little public support.

Trump told reporters on Thursday that the incursion could have been a “mistake,” adding: “I’m not happy about the whole situation at all, but I hope it ends.”

In response, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski wrote on social media: “No, it wasn’t a mistake.”

Earlier, Sikorski told local radio that Poland planned to use the Security Council meeting to “draw the world’s attention to Russia’s unprecedented violation of the airspace of a member state of the United Nations, the European Union and NATO.”

He stressed that Polish authorities do not doubt that the action was deliberate. “19 violations of our airspace, dozens of drones, some of which were shot down, an operation that lasted seven hours, all night long – this cannot be considered a coincidence,” he said.
