The German Foreign Ministry has stated that the aggressive rhetoric of the Georgian authorities towards the German Ambassador to Tbilisi, Peter Fischer, is unacceptable.
"We categorically reject the continued aggressive rhetoric of the representatives of the "Georgian Dream" party towards the German Ambassador. The German Ambassador in Tbilisi represents the position of the federal government. Germany once again calls on the Georgian authorities to stop spreading false stories about the position and policy of the EU and Germany and to change their current political course," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, which the German Embassy in Georgia distributed.
The Foreign Ministry called the accusations of the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, that Fischer is allegedly interfering in the Georgian elections by supporting those inciting political violence unfounded.
"We are concerned that by spreading disinformation and controversial narratives, it is actively undermining relations between Germany and Georgia," the Foreign Ministry stressed.
Fisher has repeatedly openly condemned the authorities' course, participated in the trials of political prisoners, and expressed support for civil society.
Against this background, pressure on him is intensifying: pro-government media outlets accuse the diplomat of ties with the opposition.
