CNN writes that the Israeli strike in the Qatari capital of Doha was not surprising, given Israel’s promise to eliminate Hamas. According to the authoritative publication, however, some aspects of the operation are still shocking. The publication singled out three main reasons:
Israel immediately claimed responsibility, unlike the last time the Israelis targeted a Hamas leader outside Gaza.
The United States and Israel had asked Qatar to host Hamas leaders. Hamas’s location was not a secret. There was an unspoken understanding that while Israel could neutralize the leaders, they would not do so, given Qatar’s role as a mediator.
The strike undermines the implementation of the hostage deal, since any agreement requires negotiations with the Hamas leadership in Doha.
