Supporters of Turkey's largest opposition party, the Republican People's Party, have taken to the streets in protest. Police have cordoned off the party's office in Istanbul's Sarıyer district.
Despite the ban, protesters gathered on Sunday and tried to break through barricades. Erdogan's appointed governor has banned demonstrations in several districts of Istanbul for three days.
Supporters of the largest opposition party have accused Erdogan's government of attempting a coup within the party. On September 2, a court dismissed the Istanbul leadership over irregularities at a party congress two years ago and decided to appoint an interim governor.
Earlier, Turkish authorities had banned rallies in six districts of the city.
On Sunday morning, CHP leader Ozgur Özel called on his supporters to take to the streets.
"We call on pro-democracy citizens to come to our Istanbul office to defend our common rights and justice," said Özel.
