On August 8, the initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia took place in Washington, which was an essential step on the path to normalization of relations between the two countries, said Ambassador Elchin Amirbekov, the special representative of the President of Azerbaijan, in an interview with the I24 News TV channel.
He noted that at this stage, we are only talking about initialing, but not about the final signing.
“The Armenian side still needs to take concrete steps to sign and further implement the peace agreement. We need to take clear steps. In particular, the Constitution of Armenia still contains clauses that express unacceptable territorial claims and contradict the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Therefore, to establish a stable peace, the Basic Law of Armenia must be brought into line with the text and spirit of the peace agreement already initialed by the two countries,” Amirbekov said.
According to him, the initialing of the agreement in itself is a significant step forward. This is the result of a constructive bilateral dialogue, the political will of both sides, and the constructive support of several international partners.
Amirbekov highly appreciated the personal contribution and efforts of US President Donald Trump.
“If this process continues seriously and decisively, a new page can be opened in the history of the South Caucasus, based on cooperation, stability, and common prosperity,” he emphasized.
