Leaders of more than 30 countries met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the possible provision of security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
After the summit in Paris, which was also held online, the European leaders had a telephone conversation with the US president.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to reporters.
The French leader announced that 26 countries support the provision of security guarantees for Ukraine.
We have 26 countries that are ready to send their armed forces to Ukraine, on land, in the air, or at sea, to ensure security, taking into account the day of reconciliation or the establishment of peace. These troops will not conduct military operations against Russia, but will contribute to maintaining peace. They will be deployed not on the front line, but in certain places to prevent possible future aggression,” Macron said.
“We spoke with the American president. The conclusions are as follows: in the coming weeks, we will clearly determine what the US contribution to this coalition will be and we will finalize it,” the French president added. According to him, further contacts between the American and Russian sides should be established, and “all signals should be translated into reality.”
“If Russia continues to reject concrete peace talks, we will go down the path of additional sanctions together with the United States,” Macron promised. Zelensky, in turn, announced that new sanctions were discussed at the Paris summit, and he considered the central element of security guarantees to be a powerful Ukrainian army, the number of which should not be limited.
