EU welcomes Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement

The EU Delegation to the Council of Europe welcomed the agreement reached between Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev on 8 August.

The EU described this agreement as “significant progress”. It stressed the importance of ensuring the timely implementation of the agreed steps, the signing and ratification of the peace treaty.

“Following the conclusion of bilateral negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan last March, this agreement is an essential step towards the full normalisation of relations between the two countries. It is based on the principles of mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, as outlined in the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.

The European Union continues to support the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalisation process.”

Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom joined the declaration.
