The death toll from devastating earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan earlier this week has risen to 1,411, and more than 3,100 people were injured, Reuters reports.
The first, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, was one of the country’s deadliest in years. Despite extensive rescue efforts, a second, magnitude 5.5 earthquake on Tuesday has again caused panic and hampered relief efforts, triggering new landslides and blocking roads.
The Taliban administration says more than 5,400 homes have been destroyed. The United Nations and international organizations warn that the death toll could rise as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
Rescue efforts are being hampered by the country’s limited resources, poorly constructed homes, and inclement weather.
