Death toll from Afghanistan earthquake passes 800

Rescue operations resumed in Afghanistan on Tuesday morning.

Recall that an earthquake struck late Sunday evening, which was one of the most powerful natural disasters in the country's history. At least 800 people were killed, and thousands more were injured to varying degrees.

Rescuers are trying to reach the most affected and inaccessible mountainous settlements.

According to the BBC, many residents spent the night outdoors. Most of the victims are from the mountainous province of Kunar, which was closest to the epicenter of the earthquake recorded late Sunday evening.

Afghan officials warn that the death toll could rise significantly, as several villages were destroyed.

Western countries have announced their readiness to assist in the process of mitigating the earthquake's consequences and providing relief.
