Former Iranian Foreign Minister and recently resigned as the country’s Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, published an article in the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine, where he touched upon the South Caucasus, emphasizing that the recent agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington should be perceived as an opportunity, not a threat.
According to Zarif, this new development could restart the regional cooperation project proposed in 2019, within the framework of which Iran, Russia, Turkey, as well as the three countries of the South Caucasus, should cooperate.
“Through the prism of this paradigm of opportunities, Iran and, even, Russia and Turkey can view the recent agreement signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington not as a threat, but as an opportunity to revive the previously proposed transit cooperation in the Caucasus between Iran, Russia and Turkey, as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia,” he wrote.
He added that such cooperation would not only boost transport and energy ties but would also create unique investment opportunities for the international private sector.
