Hiroshima marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing

The western Japanese city of Hiroshima marked the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombing on Tuesday. The event was attended by officials, international guests, and elderly witnesses who warned that the world was once again on the brink of nuclear danger.

The main ceremony of the anniversary took place at the Peace Memorial, where those present observed a moment of silence to honor the memory of the approximately 140,000 victims.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui criticized the growing tolerance of the international community towards nuclear weapons, especially against the backdrop of hostilities in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East.

“These developments grossly ignore the lessons that humanity should have learned from Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” Matsui said. “They risk destroying the architecture of peace-building that has been created as a result of decades of work.”

He called on the new generations to be vigilant and fight against policies that can lead to inhumane consequences.
