The "Zangezur Corridor" is set to be opened within the next 1-2 years. Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan

Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Birol Akgun, in an interview with the Azerbaijani APA news agency, considered the opening of the “Zangezur Corridor” very likely.

“I consider the opening of the “Zangezur Corridor” very likely, because it stems not only from the national interests of Turkey and Azerbaijan. If the integration process accelerates at the international and regional levels, then a faster and shorter passage of important oil and gas pipelines starting from China and going to London through the Middle Corridor, overland roads and railways, will be possible only with the opening of the “Zangezur Corridor,” he said.

According to the ambassador, the corridor should be considered not only from the perspective of the East and the West, but also from the North and the South.

“After the second Karabakh war, the “3+3” format was constantly discussed in the meetings of President Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. That is, this format includes not only Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia in the region, but also Turkey, Iran, and Russia, so that a solution that satisfies everyone’s interests can be found. Although there are some discussions from time to time, I believe that the “Zangezur Corridor” will be opened in the next 1-2 years, especially with the possible signing of a permanent peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. I believe that this is possible, especially in terms of ensuring the efficiency of the middle corridor and increasing trade volumes in the east-west direction. But as a diplomat, I cannot specify the date of the opening of the “Zangezur Corridor”. Since no one knows this, it is a multidimensional game. First, Azerbaijan and Armenia, as two independent states, must decide on this issue,” the Turkish ambassador emphasized.
