China will continue to buy Russian oil, paying 100% customs duty

China warned the US about Russian oil purchases.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that at the end of trade talks, he warned Chinese officials about the threat of high tariffs on further purchases of Russian oil, which are provided for in the bill before Congress.

"I think anyone who buys Russian oil that is under sanctions should be prepared for that," he said.

According to the US Treasury Secretary, in response, Chinese officials stated that China is a sovereign state, and oil purchases will be based on the country's domestic policy.

"The Chinese take their sovereignty very seriously. We do not want to encroach on it, which is why they want to pay a 100 percent tariff," he stressed.

China remains the largest buyer of Russian oil, buying about two million barrels a day, Reuters recalls. India and Turkey follow it.
