The European Union plans to use American energy resources to achieve energy independence from Russia as part of a new trade agreement with the United States, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
“Buying US energy products will diversify our sources and contribute to Europe’s energy security. We will replace Russian gas and oil with large purchases of American liquefied natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel,” she said.
At the same time, the European Commission President acknowledged that gas and oil from Russia continue to enter the European market.
“We want to get rid of Russian fossil fuels completely, so we welcome the purchase of cheaper and better liquefied natural gas from the United States,” she added.
According to her, the transition process could take two to three years.
