Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he will soon submit a new bill to the Verkhovna Rada aimed at preserving the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). The president’s initiative follows protests in Kiev in recent days against legislative changes that effectively subordinate the NABU to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
“I will send a bill to parliament that will be aimed at ensuring the stability of the law enforcement system. There will be no influence or interference in the work of law enforcement agencies. Most importantly, all necessary norms for the independence of anti-corruption structures will be observed,” Zelensky said.
He also noted that the authorities are listening to citizens’ feedback. “Everyone is listening to what people are saying on social networks, to each other, and on the streets,” the Ukrainian president added.
Recall that the law adopted on Tuesday sparked widespread discontent in Ukrainian society and triggered a wave of protests.
