The largest oil field in the country has been discovered in the Baltic Sea, adjacent to Poland, the Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) announced. The wells near the Polish island of Świnoujście have found about 22 million tons of oil and 5 billion cubic meters of gas.
It is currently estimated that, in total, this area of the Baltic Sea, which borders Germany, contains more than 33 million tons of recoverable crude oil reserves and 27 billion cubic meters of natural gas. According to Polish media, it is the largest oil field in the country.
Production of raw materials is expected to begin in 2028-2030. Before that, it is necessary to approve the field's exploitation plan and ensure compliance with environmental standards, according to local media.
The new field could more than double Poland's estimated oil reserves, which stood at 20.24 million tons as of 2023. According to EU data, Poland consumed about 30 million tons of oil and oil products in 2023. The annual natural gas consumption of the population is approximately 20 billion cubic meters.
