US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that Europeans should follow the example of the United States if the administration of President Donald Trump imposes 100 percent tariffs on the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, and those countries that support it by buying oil.
"Any country that buys Russian oil that is under sanctions will be subject to secondary tariffs of up to 100 percent. I would urge our European partners to follow our example if we impose these tariffs," Besant said in an interview with CNBC.
According to him, there is a possibility that the United States will discuss the issue of buying Russian and Iranian oil with China. Besant said that this will signal a shift in the emphasis of the negotiations from trade issues to national security issues. He added that US trade with China is in good shape.
"Now we can start discussing other things. "Unfortunately, the Chinese are huge buyers of Iranian oil, which is under sanctions, and Russian oil, which is under sanctions, so we can start discussing that," Bessent said.
