France opposes massive purchases of American weapons for Ukraine

Several European countries have enthusiastically welcomed the US initiative on large purchases of American weapons for Ukraine, but France has announced that it will not join this program. This is what Politico writes.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Europeans to develop their defense industry at the expense of local products. France is also facing problems with budget inflation and increasing defense spending.

The initiative mainly belongs to Germany, which claims that the option of purchasing American weapons is the only way to support Ukraine quickly.

Politico notes that this position contradicts previous statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had promised to make Europe more independent by reducing its dependence on the United States.
