US President Donald Trump has imposed a 35% tariff on Canada.
The tariffs will take effect on goods imported from Canada on August 1. Trump has stressed that the tariff could increase further if Canada retaliates.
“The new tariff will take effect on August 1. If Canada retaliates, we will increase the rate,” Trump wrote.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Twitter that the government would continue to protect the interests of its citizens and businesses in negotiations with the United States.
“We are determined to protect Canadians and our economy. Until then, we will continue to work with the American side to find a solution,” Carney wrote.
