European Parliament demands that Georgia be disconnected from the SWIFT system

The European Parliament has adopted a critical resolution calling for Georgia to be disconnected from the SWIFT international banking system.

It has once again been stated that Georgia’s European integration process has been “de facto halted” as a result of the ongoing democratic backsliding in Georgia and the rigged parliamentary elections in October 2024, “which are a clear turning point for the authoritarian regime.”

The European Parliament demands immediate and targeted individual sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, his family members, and his companies, and calls on the EU, in cooperation with the United Kingdom, to freeze his financial assets.

The European Parliament stressed that it does not recognize the self-proclaimed government formed by the Georgian Dream party “after the rigged parliamentary elections of October 26, 2024” and considers Georgia to be a state occupied by the illegitimate Georgian Dream regime.

MEPs stressed that they recognize Salome Zurabishvili as the legitimate President of Georgia.

The resolution was passed with 490 votes in favor, MEPs against: 147, abstentions: 49. In total, 686 MEPs participated in the session.
