Poland imposes controls on the border with Germany

Poland has introduced stationary border controls on its border with Germany since July 7. The checks began at midnight at 52 checkpoints and will last at least until August 5. Similar measures are planned for the border with Lithuania.

Passports and identity documents will be checked at the border crossing. Polish border guards will pay special attention to buses, minibuses, and vehicles carrying a large number of passengers, as well as cars with tinted windows.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that these measures are aimed at “limiting the uncontrolled flow of illegal migrants.”

Tusk has repeatedly hinted that Warsaw’s decision is a response to Berlin’s moves. In early May, Germany’s new Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt ordered increased border controls and the rejection of asylum seekers at the Polish border.
