Wildfires on the island of Crete have forced the evacuation of more than 1,500 people

A fast-spreading forest fire that broke out in the evening amid strong winds on the southern Greek island of Crete continued this morning, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,500 people from hotels and homes.

The fire broke out in the southern part of the island, in the area of ​​Ierapetra, burning forests and farmland. According to the fire service, 230 firefighters and 10 water planes are involved in extinguishing the fire, and rescuers are also preparing for evacuation by sea.

Law enforcement agencies have urged residents not to try to return to their homes to save their belongings. Tourists who were evacuated have been moved to gyms or other hotels in safer parts of the island.

Crete is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations.
