German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is pressing Brussels to sign a trade deal with the United States as soon as possible. He is concerned that the European Union could end up with an unequal deal that would only benefit US President Donald Trump.
Raising the issue at a summit of EU leaders on June 26, Merz criticized the European Commission’s negotiating strategy, calling it “too complicated.” He called for greater accountability and clarity in the talks with the US president. He plans to raise this demand with other EU leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, the BBC reports.
