G7 summit kicks off in Canada

The world’s richest leaders have arrived at a luxury mountain resort in the Canadian Rockies for this year’s G7 summit.

The gathering comes at a time of international challenges, with conflicts on three continents and looming global economic instability.

This year, Canada holds the G7 presidency and will host the leaders of Italy, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan in Canada. Canada has pledged to focus on simplified priorities around the global economy and security.

But Mark Carney’s agenda has now been derailed by the Israel-Iran conflict.

This is Carney’s first major international gathering as Canadian prime minister. The summit was meant to test his ability to achieve his three ambitious goals for Canada: to become a global leader, the strongest economy in the G7, and wean itself off the United States.

Now, Iran has unexpectedly appeared on the G7 agenda. Reaching an agreement on this issue will not be easy, especially on the front lines.

However, one thing is clear: Carney will be closely watched in how he deals with US President Donald Trump, who has frequently made statements that undermine Canadian sovereignty.
