Resistance to Hamas rule in Gaza is growing among local clans. Hamas's ability to profit from humanitarian aid has been sharply reduced since the transfer of control of aid distribution from the United Nations to the new Gaza Humanitarian Fund. Against this background, the group has increasingly executed those suspected of collaborating with Israel and accused of theft.
But now, as the Jerusalem Post reports, powerful armed Palestinian clans in the southern part of the strip have begun to speak out openly. The group, called the "Families of the Southern Governorates of the Gaza Strip," issued a statement entitled "The Cup Has Run Out."
The clans directly blame Hamas for the incident and say the group must "respond seriously and courageously to the demands of the people."
"We want to build a unified national project and a strong and comprehensive Palestinian national authority based on law, national partnership, and the rule of law," the petition authors write.
