Around 3,500 Uyghurs to be recruited into Syrian army

US Special Representative for Syria Thomas Barrack said the United States has agreed to incorporate former foreign rebels into the Syrian National Army.

According to the plan, about 3,500 foreign fighters, mostly Uighurs, will join the newly formed 84th Division.

Barrack said it was better to keep these fighters within the state structure than to leave them out of control.

Although Washington had previously insisted that these fighters be removed from the security forces, the US position changed after Trump met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara.
