Germany supports the principle of two states

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has appealed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “immediately provide sufficient humanitarian aid and ensure its safe distribution” in the region.

The German head of government also stressed during a telephone conversation with the Israeli leader that Israel’s security and right to exist are part of Germany’s state doctrine.

Merz condemned Hamas’s terrorism. The chancellor stressed that the radical Islamist movement must lay down its arms and expressed hope that an agreement on the release of all hostages and a ceasefire would be reached shortly. At the same time, the German head of government confirmed that the federal government still considers the negotiated solution to the creation of two states to be the best chance for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. Netanyahu’s reaction was not reported.
