US to double arms sales to Taiwan

US President Donald Trump plans to significantly increase arms sales to Taiwan, exceeding the $18.3 billion he approved during his first term. That amount is already more than double the sales made under President Joe Biden.

Two US officials told Reuters that the US would “easily exceed” that figure over the next four years, helping to bolster Taiwan’s defenses in the face of growing military pressure from China.

Taiwan’s government has said it wants to raise defense spending to 3 percent of GDP, but a budget cut plan proposed by the country’s opposition could derail that goal.

US officials have urged Taiwan’s opposition not to obstruct the country’s defense spending, calling it a matter of national survival.
