Macron, Tusk, and Merz congratulated the Georgian people and condemned the authorities

French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement on Georgia’s Independence Day. They criticized the Georgian Dream government and called on the authorities to engage in dialogue with the opposition and civil society.

“We support the democratic and European aspirations of the Georgian people, which reflect their desire to be part of the European family.

In this regard, we strongly condemn the actions of the Georgian authorities, which have led to a retreat from democratic norms and attacks on civil society, the media, and government critics. Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly must be guaranteed.

The Georgian authorities must restore dialogue with the opposition and civil society. The Georgian people must not be deprived of the opportunities the country’s European path provides,” the joint statement said.
