A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the island of Crete this morning, the Athens Seismological Service said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
The quake struck at a depth of 64.4 km, about 19 km south of the island of Kasos.
Greece’s emergency services issued a tsunami warning through the 112 emergency number, advising residents to evacuate coastal areas.
The tremors were felt in Israel, southwestern Turkey, and parts of Egypt.
Greece lies on several seismic fault lines and is prone to frequent earthquakes.
