The Financial Times reports that the EU is preparing to impose higher tariffs on imports from Ukraine from June 6.
According to the publication, Poland played a key role in this decision, seeking to protect the European agricultural sector from competition from Ukrainian products amid mass farmer protests.
The EU proposal provides for a sharp reduction in duty-free quotas for corn from 4.7 million tons to 650 thousand, poultry from 57.1 thousand to 40 thousand and sugar from 109 thousand to 40.7 thousand tons.
A free trade agreement was previously signed between the EU and Ukraine, and after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, other tariffs were also canceled. However, their validity expires on June 6. The EU plans to replace existing tariffs with "transitional" tariffs while the parties work to update the trade agreement.
