In the second round of voting, the Bundestag elected Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union, as Chancellor of Germany. The politician received 325 votes, 316 of which were needed to form a majority. 289 deputies voted against, one abstained, and three more ballots were declared invalid.
Earlier today, Merz did not receive enough votes to be elected Chancellor in the first round of the Bundestag elections. 310 members of parliament voted in favor of Merz's candidacy. Merz became the tenth Chancellor in the country's history since World War II.
