French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday, the Elysee Palace said.
Macron will “confirm France’s support for the construction of a free, stable, sovereign Syria that respects all segments of its society,” the statement said.
The presidency said the meeting is part of France’s historic commitment to supporting the Syrian people in their quest for peace and democracy.
Macron had invited the newly appointed leader to visit France in February after Islamist-led forces toppled longtime President Bashar al-Assad late last year.
In March, he reiterated the invitation, making it conditional on a commitment to form an inclusive government. He said initial talks had been “positive.”
