The world's longest prefabricated tunnel is being built between Denmark and Germany

The BBC reports that the world's longest prefabricated Fehmarnbelt tunnel is being built under the Baltic Sea between Denmark and Germany. The structure will consist of individual elements, like Lego.

It will be 18 km long, making it the world's longest prefabricated road and rail tunnel. The tunnel sections will be laid on the seabed and then connected.

The project's main construction site is located at the tunnel's northern entrance on the coast of the island of Lolland in southeastern Denmark. The structure covers an area of more than 500 hectares and includes a port and a factory where the tunnel sections are manufactured.

Steel is cast in concrete to produce each section (217 m long and 42 m wide).
