Vatican reveals cause of Pope's death

The cause of death of Pope Francis was a stroke and its consequences, announced the head of the Vatican's health and hygiene office, Andrea Arcangeli.

"I confirm that His Holiness Francis died on April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m., in his apartment in the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican, from a stroke and irreversible consequences," the head of the cardiovascular health service said.

Arcangeli added that the Pope's condition was complicated by acute respiratory failure following bilateral multi-organ pneumonia, with multiple bronchiectasis (pathologically dilated bronchial tubes), high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

An electrocardiogram confirmed the pontiff's death.
