Vance leaves for India

US Vice President JD Vance is traveling to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discuss a bilateral trade deal.

The White House described Vance’s visit as focused on “shared economic and geopolitical priorities.” At the same time, India said Vance’s visit would “provide an opportunity for both sides to review the progress of our bilateral relationship.”

President Donald Trump imposed a 26% tariff on India on April 2, despite his good relations with Modi. The 90-day pause has provided temporary relief, but Delhi is cautious.

Indian officials are working hard to hammer out the first phase of a trade deal to avoid further economic fallout. Both sides hope to complete the agreements by the fall. India has already lowered tariffs on some American goods; further broad cuts are expected.
