Who was Pope Francis?

Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Catholic Church, died on April 21 at the age of 88.

Francis's secular name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected Pope on March 13, 2013, in a conclave convened after Benedict XVI's resignation. Bergoglio became the first pope from Latin America, the first from the Society of Jesus, and the first non-European in more than a millennium.

Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936, an Argentine by birth, in Buenos Aires.
